Bill Muter is a multi-instrumentalist, author, producer, and tuba mogul with a performance career as diverse as his audience. Recognized globally for his innovative approach to low brass, Bill has earned the nickname “Tuba Visionary” and was hailed by The New Times as “The Most Innovative Tuba Player We’ve Seen.” His performances span the world, from prestigious jazz festivals to Broadway tours, solidifying his reputation as one of the leading tuba and bass players of his generation.
Bill serves as a Cultural Ambassador with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, a program pioneered by legends like Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington. Since joining in 2018, he has engaged in cultural diplomacy efforts across Latin America, earning a letter of recognition from the President for his contributions. His work with U.S. Embassies has taken him to Mexico, Kosovo, Costa Rica, and Indonesia, strengthening cross-cultural musical exchange.
An in-demand clinician and speaker, Bill has presented for esteemed organizations such as the International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA), the “Pershing’s Own” U.S. Army Band, and Germany’s National Public Radio alongside tuba legend Bob Stewart. He has also played a role in music education worldwide, serving on the Music Curriculum Advisory Board for Honeyland College in Lagos, Nigeria, and as a panelist for numerous arts grants. His accolades include:
• 2020 GRAMMY Foundation Grant Award Winner
• 2024 Keeping the Blues Alive Winner
• 2025 United States Artists Fellowship Nominee
• 2025 Herb Alpert Award Nominee
• 2025 America’s Best Teacher Nominee
As an author, Bill’s first technique book, “A Practical Approach,” became a bestseller on Apple’s iBookstore, outselling The Real Book and The Beatles Songbook. Originally released in Japan in collaboration with Kyodo Tokyo and BRASS tribe magazine, his books are now available at Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Expanding his reach beyond traditional publishing, Bill developed the “Modern Tuba Online Course,” a month-long interactive program featuring artists such as Sergio Carolino, Andrew Hitz, Roland Szentpali, Ibanda Rhumbika, and Scott Sutherland. Tuba virtuoso Roger Bobo praised the course as “very well articulated.”
Bill is also deeply involved in the marching arts as a clinician, designer, and adjudicator. He has worked with Boston Crusaders, Crossmen, and Colts Drum & Bugle Corps, and served as Music Caption Head for WGI Gold Medalist “Stryke Wynds.” His expertise in sound design and arranging has shaped award-winning programs in both drum corps and indoor winds circuits.
His work as a composer and producer has been featured on BET, Okayplayer, XXL Magazine, and at the Tribeca Film Festival. His compositions span commercial, band, and film projects, with his first Academy Award-qualifying film, Aurinko in Adagio (directed by Elisee Jr St Preux) earning an NAACP Image Award nomination. His solo albums have topped international charts, reaching #1 on iTunes in South Africa and securing a spot in the Top 30 Global R&B charts.
As a performer, Bill toured for five years as a tuba soloist, percussionist, and keyboardist in the Tony and Emmy Award-winning Broadway show Blast!, with multiple tours in Japan, South Korea, and North America. He has also performed with Jon Batiste, Shania Twain, Shaun Martin, Munir Hossn, Warren Wolf, Stefon Harris, Drew Tucker, Casey Benjamin, MonoNeon, and the U.S. Army Blues Combo. Notable festival appearances include the Montreux Jazz Festival, Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, GroundUP Festival, and SunFest.
