Artist Snapshot
Embarking on a career as a jazz and commercial tuba player is often viewed as an almost insurmountable challenge, given the instrument's association primarily with classical music and academia. However, Bill Muter has consistently rejected the status quo surrounding the musical possibilities of his chosen instrument.
Early in his career, Bill recognized that to effect change for tuba players, he needed to carve out his own opportunities and pave the way for new conversations and possibilities. This determination has fueled Bill's work over the years, earning him the moniker "Tuba Visionary" for his outstanding contributions, lauded by The New Times as "The most innovative tuba player we've seen."
Bill has forged a career by defying those who claimed certain music couldn't be played on the tuba, setting the tuba community ablaze and proving them wrong. Notable highlights include his role as the tuba soloist in the Tony and Emmy Award-winning Broadway show “Blast” as well as sharing the stage as a bassist for some of the top musicians in the jazz field.
Beyond performing, Bill's greatest passion lies in giving back to the art form. Holding the prestigious title of "Jazz Ambassador" with the U.S. State Department, he collaborates globally to inspire and enrich young and underserved audiences. Bill is also an award-winning sound designer and music arranger. His recent contribution to an Academy Award Qualifying film earned a nomination for an NAACP Image Award, reaching audiences worldwide on streaming services.
