Artist Snapshot
Multi-instrumentalist, author, producer, and tuba mogul Bill Muter has a performance career as diverse as his audience. Having performed in venues across the globe, Bill is without a doubt one of the leading tuba and bass players, earning him the nickname “Tuba Visionary.” The New Times named Bill as “The Most Innovative Tuba Player We’ve Seen.”
Bill serves as a Cultural Ambassador with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, a program that was pioneered by Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington in the 1950s. Bill began his tenure with the State Department in 2018 and received a letter of recognition from the President for his cultural diplomacy in Latin America. As of 2024, Bill is currently on assignment with embassies in Kosovo, Nigeria, Uganda, Lebanon, and Indonesia. As a lecturer and clinician, Bill has presented to numerous music organizations across the globe, including the International Tuba Euphonium Association, the “Pershing’s Own” U.S. Army Band, and recently served on a panel discussion with tuba legend Bob Stewart on German National Public Radio. Bill was also on the Music Curriculum Advisory Board for Honeyland College in Lagos, Nigeria. Bill serves on the Freelance/Jazz Committee for the International Tuba Euphonium Association and has been a panelist for numerous art grants. Bill was a 2020 GRAMMY Foundation Grant award winner as well as a 2024 United States Artists Fellowship Nominee.
As an author, Bill’s first technique book “A Practical Approach” reached bestseller status on Apple’s iBookstore, topping sales of the popular RealBooks series and the Beatles SongBooks. "A Practical Approach" was originally released in Japan in 2012 and sold throughout every prefecture in collaboration with Kyodo Tokyo and the Japanese magazine ブラストライブ “BRASS tribe.” Since then, Bill has written and been a part of numerous publications for musicians, as well as being a contributing author to ITEA. Bill’s books are available at Barnes and Noble. More recently, with the goal of wider distribution and availability, Bill has pivoted from traditional paperback works towards new eLearning platforms. Bill developed the “Modern Tuba Online Course” in collaboration with other artists Sergio Carolino, Andrew Hitz, Roland Szentpali, Ibanda Rhumbika, Scott Sutherland, and others. The month-long interactive course is geared towards teaching tuba players the essential skills necessary to thrive in today’s commercial playing environment. The course has been featured in “The Young Musicians Guide” podcast, “Mind Body Pockets” podcast, “Last Row Music,” and the “JazzMemes” educational platform paired along with other notable artists such as Cory Wong, Ulysses Owens Jr, Bria Skonberg, Dave Koz, and Jason Marsalis. The Modern Tuba program was also developed into part of the curriculum for the University of Tampa’s low brass studio as well as other schools across the nation. Tuba virtuoso Roger Bobo has praised Bill’s course to be “very well articulated.”
Bill is heavily involved with the marching arts activity as a clinician, designer, and adjudicator. Bill has worked with the Boston Crusaders, Crossmen, and Colts Drum and Bugle Corps brass staff and was also the Music Caption Head for the WGI Gold Medalist “Stryke Wynds.” Bill is an Artist in Residence at the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach and an Assistant Director at West Broward High School in Pembroke Pines, Florida for the past 12 years.
Bill's compositions for band and film have garnered attention, with his works being featured on platforms like BET, Okayplayer, XXL Magazine, and the Tribeca Film Festival. Bill’s first Academy Award qualifying film "Aurinko in Adagio” by Elisee Jr St Preux was recently nominated for an NAACP Image Award. His solo albums for tuba have reached #1 on the iTunes Charts in South Africa and in the Top 30 Global R&B charts. Bill actively designs for marching bands in the Bands of America and USBands circuits, having achieved success with multiple state champion ensembles.
As a performer, Bill was a tuba soloist, percussionist, and keyboardist for 6 years in the Tony and Emmy Award-winning Broadway Show “Blast!” with numerous tours in Japan, South Korea, and North America. Bill is currently the Music Director for “Drew Tucker and The New Standard” and the tuba/bassist for Sarah Reich of Postmodern Jukebox. Bill has shared the stage with many current jazz greats, including the U.S. Army Blues, Stefon Harris, Casey Benjamin, Warren Wolf, Matthew Whitaker, James Francies, MonoNeon, Philip Lassiter, and Munir Hossn, as well as the horn and rhythm section members of Snarky Puppy with Shaun Martin’s Gogo Shows. Bill was a trombonist with the Haitian Kompa band “Gabel” for 4 years with tours in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the French Antilles, Canada, and more. Bill is also the bassist for TV stars/vocalists, Cassady McClincy and Margot Bingham.
