Day 5 - Minor II-V-I Bass Lines
Now that we have a greater understand of the form and function of the Major II-V-I progression let’s take a look at its minor counterpart.
Here is what you need to know
Whether it is a major key or minor key, the II-V-I progression still serves the same purpose. It is as simple as that. The progression is just a street sign pointing us in a new direction. The only difference is that now we are in a minor key which is synonymous with the sad emotion where as a major key would normally be considered a “happy” key.
The Theory
The minor II-V-I is constructed using a diminished triad. major triad and a minor triad, as pictured below
Working these progressions is not only a great dexterity exercise but serves as a great flow exercise on the chops as well. So let’s get into it!
Minor II-V-I in all 12 Keys
Please be aware that the accidentals change every measure. It is easy to miss the new set of flats or sharps and play a note that takes them out of the key. Harmonically speaking, every 16th notes move in the exact same direction, just in different tonal centers.
